### How it works {#how-it-works}

![how it works](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/mastercom/uploads/Mastercom_How_It_Works.jpg)

Issuers and acquirers use Mastercom to resolve disputed transactions by participating in Mastercom Collaboration and by creating chargebacks, second presentments, and cases as part of the dispute cycle. Mastercom helps facilitate efficient sharing of information during the dispute cycle to determine which party has financial responsibility for disputed transactions and allows funds to move between issuers and acquirers.

The Mastercom system

* Supports all events in the dispute lifecycle, from Collaboration to case filing
* Allows issuers and acquirers to manage all dispute events stemming from one first presentment under one claim
* Allows issuers to report confirmed fraud into the Fraud \& Loss Database
* Supports reversals and fee collection messages

### Use cases {#use-cases}

![Participate in Collaboration](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/mastercom/uploads/participate_in_collaboration.svg)

###### Participate in Collaboration {#participate-in-collaboration}

The Collaboration process, occurring before the first chargeback clears, allows issuers, acquirers, and merchants to settle disputes quickly and efficiently.
![Create chargebacks](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/mastercom/uploads/create_chargebacks.svg)

###### Create chargebacks {#create-chargebacks}

An issuer can create a chargeback to return disputed funds to a cardholder. The acquirer can later create a second presentment to move the money back again.
![Create fee collections](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/mastercom/uploads/create_fee_collections.svg)

###### Create fee collections {#create-fee-collections}

Either party can create a fee to request payment from an issuer or acquirer.
