### A cardholder can redeem rewards pre-purchase {#a-cardholder-can-redeem-rewards-pre-purchase}

Pay with Rewards offers cardholders two ways to redeem:

* Pre-purchase when they turn it on in advance
* Post-purchase when they select a prior purchase for statement credit

For pre-purchase, cardholders turn on Pay with Rewards through their existing loyalty program website or mobile app. Pay with Rewards can be turned on for "All Purchases" or for "Next Purchase" only.

**Recommendation:** Even though issuers can choose to offer both pre-purchase options ---"All Purchases" or "Next Purchase"--- our recommendation is to allow "Next Purchase" only. Using "Next Purchase" helps create better cardholder engagement because users update their settings each time they want to redeem points towards a purchase.

Once Pay with Rewards is enabled, cardholders simply use their enrolled card and Pay with Rewards automatically redeems their rewards points when an eligible purchase is made.

**Minimums and maximums:** Pay with Rewards offers cardholders the flexibility to choose a **transaction minimum** , meaning points will only be redeemed if the transaction amount exceeds a certain threshold. Additionally, there is the option for cardholders to set a **redemption maximum**, allowing only a fixed amount to be redeemed against transactions.

Note: It is also optional for an issuer to apply a program-wide redemption minimum, which would apply to all cardholders in a program. A redemption minimum will only redeem points if the amount being redeemed exceeds the set minimum. Typically, the redemption amount aligns with the transaction amount. However, there are scenarios, such as partial redemptions, where the two amounts may not match exactly. This distinction is crucial for understanding how both transaction and redemption minimums function within Pay with Rewards.
