# Payment Success Indicator
source: https://developer.mastercard.com/open-finance-us/documentation/products/pay/psi-tools/index.md

Note: This documentation has been updated to describe the latest PSI endpoints which add support for an unauthorized return score. For details of the legacy endpoints, see [Legacy PSI Endpoints](https://developer.mastercard.com/open-finance-us/documentation/products/pay/psi-tools/legacy/index.md).

Payment Success Indicator (PSI) enables you to reduce
failed account-to-account payments by delivering two predictive risk
scores through a unified API endpoint. One score assesses the likelihood
of non-sufficient funds (NSF), and the second score evaluates the risk
of unauthorized returns. By leveraging PSI, you can improve
payment success rates, reduce return costs and enhance the overall
consumer experience.

## Benefits {#benefits}

With PSI, you can:

1. Proactively reduce failed payments by assessing the risk of non-sufficient funds or unauthorized returns before submitting a transaction.
2. Embed a seamless, real-time risk check directly into your payment flow via a unified API.
3. Optimize payment timing, routing, or method by using predictive insights to improve success rates and enhance customer satisfaction.

## Use Cases {#use-cases}

PSI helps US partners manage and reduce ACH return rates, specifically
for R01 (non-sufficient funds) and R10 (unauthorized fraud) return
codes, which are regulated by [NACHA](https://www.nacha.org/content/about-us) and subject to compliance
thresholds. Exceeding these thresholds can lead to fines or restrictions
with ACH processing.

Common use cases include:

* **Account Funding \& Wallets:** Reduce failed deposits by verifying risk before initiating ACH funding or wallet top-ups and transfers.
* **Bill Payments \& Subscriptions:** Improve recurring payment success for utilities, telecom, and other service providers.
* **Ecommerce \& Digital Transactions:** Reduce fraud and return rates on high-risk transactions.
* **Financial Services**: Support secure loan repayments, disbursements, and brokerage transfers.
* **Insurance \& Healthcare:** Ensure timely premium payments, reimbursements, and patient payments by avoiding return scenarios.
* **Government \& Public Services:** Enable reliable ACH disbursements for benefits and tax-related payments.
