## Transactions and Statements {#transactions-and-statements}

### Overview {#overview}

Using Mastercard Open Finance, customers can log in to their financial accounts
and grant access to information such as transaction data or bank
statements.

When a customer gives permission to access their raw transaction data, we aggregate all
the transactions from across their accounts and clean, normalize, and
categorize them into one of [120
categories](https://developer.mastercard.com/open-finance-us/documentation/api-reference/index.md?view=model#Categorization).

For each transaction, an entity name, such as a payroll provider,
employer, or merchant name, is identified from the transaction
description that can help identify the transaction's source. At this
point, the data is ready to be analyzed and fashioned into attributes
relevant to credit underwriting, tenant screening, financial management,
and many other use cases.

If your workflows require copies of bank statements, a customer can
permission statement collection directly from their financial
institution, saving both sides the time and hassle of finding,
downloading, and emailing pages and pages of documents. This product
can also help reduce risk of fraud by providing the statement straight from the source.

### Benefits {#benefits}

* Flexibility -- build any desired attribute from the transaction data provided
* Low cost -- products are competitively priced
* Timeliness -- data is retrieved quickly direct from the financial institution and is up-to-date

## Assets and Balances {#assets-and-balances}

### Overview {#overview-1}

Using Open Finance, customers can log in to their financial accounts
and grant access to transaction data to allow insights into their assets
and balances.

Asset reports include both debit and credit transaction data aggregated
from the customer's accounts. The reports also include account owner
details and asset summaries over different time periods.

Balance reports also include both debit and credit transaction data and
account owner details. They are differentiated from Asset reports
through the inclusion of attributes customizable over different time
periods that allow a deeper look at balance details.

Using these products improves the customer experience by removing the
need for manual bank statement collection, and improves the lender
experience by providing data that can be ingested for real-time
decisions.

## Income \& Employment {#income--employment}

### Overview {#overview-2}

Using Open Finance, customers can log in to their financial accounts
and grant access to transaction data and payroll data, or upload
paystubs, to allow insights into their income and employment.
Open Finance provides two primary methods for income and employment
verification -- deposit-based and payroll-based.

### Deposit-based Income \& Employment Verification {#deposit-based-income--employment-verification}

Deposit income and employment products evaluate credit transaction data
aggregated from the customer's accounts. Deposits are grouped into
streams of like transactions and evaluated using industry-leading income
classification models. Assessing a number of factors, the models assign
a confidence score indicating the degree to which a stream likely
represents income. A cadence of deposits is also determined, which helps
determine if a stream is still actively receiving deposits, and when the
next deposit can be expected.

### Payroll-based Income \& Employment Verification {#payroll-based-income--employment-verification}

Payroll income and employment products evaluate data aggregated from the
customer's payroll provider. The customer searches for their payroll
provider and logs in using their credentials, very similar to the
process for providing access to their bank data.

Because the data comes from the payroll source, it has all the
employment related data points you would need: employer name, employment
status, etc.
Note: Mastercard also provides a Paystub-Enhanced Deposit Income product that increases the success rate and confidence of identifying the customer's full income information. Mastercard collects the customer's paystub, digitizes it, and matches it to the connected bank accounts. This allows for a more accurate gross income calculation, earnings breakdown, and income identification. See [VOIE -- Paystub w/ TXVerify](https://developer.mastercard.com/open-finance-us/documentation/products/lend/reports/voie-paystub/index.md) for more information.

Using deposit-based and payroll-based income and employment products
improves the customer experience by removing the need for manual income
document collection and sharing. These products improve the lender
experience by removing the need to call employers to verify employment
status and providing secure and validated data that can be ingested for
real-time decisions.

## Cash Flow {#cash-flow}

### Overview {#overview-3}

Using Open Finance, consumers and businesses can permission
their bank account transaction data to allow deeper insight
into their financial health. Cash flow opens the door for more
consumers, especially thin file/no file, and small businesses
to get access to needed credit.

Cash Flow reports include both debit and credit transaction data and
account owner details. They include a variety of attributes customizable
over different time periods that allow a deeper look at cash flow
details such as NSFs, inflows, outflows, and net cash flow. Balance data
works hand in hand with cash flow data.

Payment Risk Insights reports also include debit and credit transaction data
and account owner details. They are differentiated from Cash Flow
reports through the inclusion of additional attributes such as income,
spending assessments, and the Payment Risk Score, which predicts the
risk of an NSF occurring in the near future based on an analysis of
transaction data.

### Benefits {#benefits-3}

* Reach -- using cash flow in underwriting allows financial institutions to navigate limitations of traditional bureau data, including timeliness, a limited view into financial health, determining ability to pay, and bias against certain segments of the population
* Financial inclusion -- approximately 50 million Americans are thin file or no file, a segment that continues to be refreshed as younger consumers enter the credit space, and a sizeable population often blocked from traditional credit products; cash flow data also helps small business credit applicants who frequently struggle to get access to the credit they need
* Low cost -- products are competitively priced
* Timeliness -- data is retrieved quickly direct from the financial institution and is up to date
