# Returning User Experience
source: https://developer.mastercard.com/open-finance-us/documentation/experience-design-guide/connect-enhancements-and-features/returning-user-experience/index.md

The Returning User Experience (RUX) enables returning customers to quickly and securely share financial data using Mastercard Data Connect. By recognizing customers who have previously linked accounts, RUX accelerates repeat data-sharing sessions while maintaining strong authentication, consent, and transparency.

Both Data Connect Full and Data Connect Lite support RUX. The experience adapts automatically based on product and institution.

## Benefits of the Returning User Experience {#benefits-of-the-returning-user-experience}

Many customers connect financial accounts more than once---across apps, use cases, or over time. RUX is designed to recognize those customers and make repeat account sharing faster, clearer, and more consistent across Mastercard Data Connect.

With RUX, customers who have already shared accounts can quickly authenticate and continue their journey without repeating steps they've already completed. Their previously shared financial institutions and accounts are available again, and the experience adapts automatically, based on the institution and product being used.

RUX benefits to you:

* A smoother experience while maintaining strong security
* Clear consent
* Customer visibility into data sharing

RUX benefits to customers:

* Secure, faster authentication in future sessions
* Instant sharing of eligible financial accounts without re-entering credentials when using a registered passkey
* Institutions are recommended based on the customer's previous selections for faster account linking (Data Connect Full integrations only)

To promote transparency and customer trust, customers can view all their active data connections through a standalone dashboard. Customers receive an SMS link to this dashboard each time they link a new account with a RUX-enabled partner and can also access it anytime at [connections.finicity.com](https://connections.finicity.com). Together, these features increase visibility into data activity while improving satisfaction and reducing friction across the Data Connect experience.
Note: The [Add Customer](https://developer.mastercard.com/open-finance-us/documentation/api-reference/index.md#AddCustomer) endpoint includes an optional field for adding a mobile number during the "Create Customer" step. By including this field, the customer's mobile number is pre-filled on the mobile entry screen, removing a step for the user. Once the customer is registered, they simply verify their identity to have access to their previously-shared accounts.

## How Returning User Experience Works {#how-returning-user-experience-works}

### Returning Customers {#returning-customers}

When a customer returns to your app, even if their first session was with a different Mastercard partner:

1. If there is no phone number present in the customer record, RUX prompts them to enter their mobile phone number.

2. They authenticate using either:

   * Registered passkey

   * OTP (one-time passcode) if a passkey was not created

3. Previously shared institutions and eligible accounts are presented for selection.

### First-Time Customers {#first-time-customers}

1. If there is no phone number present in the customer record, RUX prompts them to enter their mobile phone number.
2. Verify identity using a one-time passcode (OTP).
3. (Optional) Create a passkey for faster authentication in future sessions.
4. Select and share financial accounts.

   Once the session is complete:

* Bank selections are securely saved
* The customer receives an SMS link to a dashboard where they can review active data connections

Note: If a customer completes the OTP but chooses to skip passkey creation during registration, they still benefit from recorded account selections and are taken directly to FI selection when they return. However, they must re-authenticate as they did during their initial experience.

## RUX with Data Connect Full and Data Connect Lite {#rux-with-data-connect-full-and-data-connect-lite}

The customer's flow depends on whether your application is using Data Connect Full or Data Connect Lite, as described below:

### Data Connect Full {#data-connect-full}

* Once authenticated, customers are taken directly to:

  * Suggested financial institutions, or

  * Account selection for previously shared institutions

* If re-authentication with the FI is required, customers proceed directly to the FI login after selection

### Data Connect Lite {#data-connect-lite}

* Customers can link previously shared accounts without re-entering banking credentials when supported

* If re-authentication is required, authenticated customers are taken directly to the FI login
