## Loyalty Attribution and Spend Controls {#loyalty-attribution-and-spend-controls}

Loyalty attribution and spend controls represent two of the most operationally critical downstream applications of the enrichment offered by Merchant Identifier -- and both are fundamentally dependent on the same underlying capability: knowing, with confidence, which merchant a transaction occurred at and what category it belongs to.

Merchant Identifier helps create a single, trusted merchant data layer that both capabilities can draw from simultaneously, reducing complexity and improving consistency across the cardholder experience.

### Loyalty attribution {#loyalty-attribution}

For loyalty attribution, enriched merchant data ensures every eligible transaction is correctly identified and rewarded without manual intervention. Category-based earn rates, merchant- or brand-specific cashback offers, and partner-funded rewards function at scale when merchant identity is verified and reliable.

Beyond baseline attribution, enrichment enables more sophisticated program design -- introducing features like tiered rewards by merchant or spend frequency, geo-targeted offers based on merchant location, coalition loyalty across a diverse merchant network, and personalized incentive journeys built on a cardholder's actual spending behavior.

### Spend controls {#spend-controls}

For spend controls, enriched merchant categorization allows restrictions, limits, and flags to be applied with precision and confidence at the point of authorization. Whether enforcing corporate travel and expense policies, restricting card usage to approved merchant categories, or flagging transactions inconsistent with a cardholder's established spending profile, controls fire on verified merchant intelligence. This reduces both control gaps and false positives, improving the cardholder experience while maintaining the integrity of the control framework.

### Where it applies {#where-it-applies}

* **Financial Institutions \& Issuers** use enriched merchant data to power category-based loyalty programs and enforce spend controls accurately at the point of authorization.
* **Fintechs \& Neobanks** use enriched merchant categorization to deliver real-time rewards, configurable spend controls, and personalized financial incentives within a single app experience.
* **Retailers \& Merchants** use enriched transaction data to ensure partner merchant transactions are consistently identified and attributed for accurate point issuance, redemption tracking, and partner performance reporting across a diverse merchant network.
* **Travel \& Hospitality** use enriched merchant categorization to apply category-specific earn rates, enforce travel policy controls for corporate cardholders, and trigger travel-related benefits accurately at the point of transaction.
* **Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) \& Lending Platforms** use enriched merchant data to apply category-based financing rules, restrict lending to approved merchant types, and attribute transactions accurately for portfolio reporting and risk assessment.
