## What Mastercard is doing {#what-mastercard-is-doing}

Mastercard is working across the payments ecosystem to create the new standard for online commerce. The goal is to deliver tokenized, seamless, and secure checkout experiences, no matter how cardholders choose to pay. To support this objective, Mastercard introduced [Mastercard Checkout Solutions](https://developer.mastercard.com/mastercard-checkout-solutions/documentation) which offers a suite of products and frameworks, all underpinned by network tokenization.

[Secure Card on File (SCOF)](https://developer.mastercard.com/mastercard-checkout-solutions/documentation/use-cases/card-on-file) is a product and a set of APIs within Mastercard Checkout Solutions which allows merchants, commerce platforms, and service providers to tokenize their cards on file, while supporting new use cases and features to drive more seamless and secure transactions. SCOF also supports Mastercard Payment Passkeys that are exclusively available through Mastercard Checkout Solutions. You can leverage the passkeys to enable merchants and service providers to perform simple, biometric authentication of the cardholder with facial recognition or a fingerprint verification. In addition, merchants who use Click to Pay for guest checkout also benefit from the ability to request a dedicated SCOF token, provided they are integrated with the SCOF APIs. This enables them to store payment credentials for future use cases, such as recurring payments and subscriptions, when cardholders choose to save their payment information.

## Impact and Action Required {#impact-and-action-required}

These features, along with all planned future enhancements, will not be available to integrators on MDES for Merchants (M4M). Mastercard will globally decommission MDES for Merchants effective 31 December 2026. Prior to this date, all existing M4M customers must integrate with Secure Card on File (SCOF) and migrate their existing tokens.
