# Masterpass™ Branding Requirements
source: https://developer.mastercard.com/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/branding/masterpass-branding-requirements/index.md

## Introduction {#introduction}

Masterpass™ is a digital payment service built to remove friction at checkout on all channels and devices. With a simple Masterpass integration, merchants can easily optimize the shopping experience at every point of sale without modifying current payment processing flows.

This page is intended to ensure that merchants, service providers, and their developers appropriately integrate Masterpass' branding in their checkout environment. It covers the different types of brand assets and details how, where, and when they should be used within a merchant's checkout user interface as well as marketing communications. These requirements apply to both browser and mobile app interfaces unless otherwise specified. Adherence to these requirements will help ensure effective integration of Masterpass' brand assets so that consumer checkout is quick and easy.
Note:

* This document replaces all prior versions of the*Masterpass Merchant Branding Requirements*. This information is subject to change so always visit this page for the latest information.
* For the web checkout user interface, merchants or service providers are required to integrate to Masterpass assets in SVG format via URLs. Local hosting on the merchant/service provider side is against Masterpass integration requirements. For a mobile app native user interface, merchants are recommended to use the same URLs; however, they may locally host images in other formats in case it's easier to integrate. For further details, refer to [Masterpass Merchant Integration](https://developer.mastercard.com/documentation/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7).

Mastercard reserves the right to withdraw its permission to use Masterpass services at anytime its use is deemed inconsistent with these requirements, or is otherwise deemed inappropriate by Mastercard.

## Masterpass Branding Assets {#masterpass-branding-assets}

There are two primary Masterpass branding asset types that can be used in a merchant's checkout user interface and marketing communications, they are:

* Masterpass Mark
* Masterpass Button

### Masterpass Mark {#masterpass-mark}

**The Masterpass Mark must:**

* Be used to promote the overall Masterpass product
* Be used to communicate that Masterpass is a payment option and to convey its acceptance
* Never be used to launch the Masterpass wallet user interface
* The Mark is made up of a red circle and a yellow circle (known as the circles design) and the "masterpass" logotype; this logotype must not be modified in any way
* The Mark is available in a horizontal or vertical configuration. The selection of either configuration depends on available space, however, the horizontal version is preferred. See [Masterpass Digital Assets](https://developer.mastercard.com/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/branding/masterpass-digital-assets/index.md) for all supported configurations via URLs

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-1.png)

* The Mark is available in "Positive" (for use on white / light backgrounds) and "Reverse" (for use on black / dark backgrounds). Both versions have transparent backgrounds allowing the merchant's user interface color to show behind the Mark. Mastercard prefers the Mark to appear on solid white or solid black background whenever possible

* **Positive Mark for white / light backgrounds**

* The "masterpass" logotype, including trademark designations, must be black when appearing on light image / background color values that range from the equivalent of 0%-45% black

* The circles design always appears in full color

* Sufficient contrast from the background color is required

* **Reverse Mark for black / dark backgrounds**

* The "masterpass" logotype, including trademark designations, must be white when appearing on dark image / background color values that range from the equivalent of 46%-100% black

* The circles design always appears in full color

* Sufficient contrast from the background color is required

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-2.png)

* A merchant may position the Mark on a variety of white or black shapes/footprints, provided the minimum clear space around the Mark is followed. Do not crowd the Mark into a shape nor position the Mark over a shape with a color other than white or black

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-3.png)

* The Mark must be used in full-color on a web user interface and in marketing. While a grayscale or solid (one-color) Mark is available, it is only permitted to be used in mobile interfaces where all other payment options also appear in grayscale or solid (one-color), or in print applications where only one-color printing is available

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-4.png)

* The Reverse Mark must be used on dark backgrounds. Do not position a Mark (Positive or Reverse) over a shape of any color other than black or white

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-5.png)

* The Masterpass Mark must appear in a size that is at least visually equal to the largest payment brand displayed, and must be at full-color parity (i.e., the Mark must be full color if other logos are full color). The Mark must be placed in line with other buttons if shown horizontally, or if shown vertically, the Mark should not be placed in last position, appear in grayscale or one color, or in print applications where only one color printing is available.

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-6.png)

* Surround the Mark with sufficient clear space based, on the value of "x" which equals the width of the "m" in "masterpass"

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-7.png)

* The Mark must be used at a size that is clear and legible. Appropriate sizing depends on screen resolution and print quality. A good general rule is to follow the minimum sizes as indicated below

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-8.png)

* When the vertical configuration of the Masterpass or Mastercard® Mark is used on a user interface where the display size of the logotype is less than 48 points wide:
* The "masterpass" logotype may be omitted. When omitted, "Masterpass" must be set with an upper case "M" and a lowercase "p" and must appear in text in the system operating font and directly to the right of the circles. Omitting the logotype is not permitted on any non-digital applications

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-9.png)

* The "mastercard" logotype (when used in a sequence of card payment options) may be omitted. When omitted, "Cards" or similar, must appear in text in the system operating font and positioned next to or near the card payment options. Omitting the logotype is not permitted on any non-digital applications

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-10.png)

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-11.png)

* To assist with consumer recognition, display the Masterpass Mark (and other similar digital wallet options) separately from traditional card options. We recommend to categorize payment methods into these broad categories as below:
* 'Cards' -- this includes traditional credit/debit/prepaid card methods such as Mastercard, Maestro, etc
* 'Wallets' -- this includes digital wallet services such as Masterpass
* 'Others' -- this includes any other payments methods such as online banking, etc

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-12.png)

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-13.png)

* If Masterpass appears with traditional card options, some form of differentiation between Mastercard and Masterpass is recommended. Either alternate with vertical and horizontal configurations for each (as shown above), or use Positive and Reverse versions for each, as shown below

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-14.png)

* The Mark may be used with radio buttons, tabs and drop-down payment opions

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-15.png)

### Masterpass Button {#masterpass-button}

**The Masterpass Button must be used:**

* As an actionable, directly clickable asset that immediately launches the Masterpass wallet experience
* In marketing communications only when specifically referencing clickable functionality as in "Use where you see" \[+ Button\]
* In full-color
* The Masterpass Button is available in a standard size and in a range of extended sizes to accommodate a longer horizontal footprint. See [Masterpass Digital Assets](https://developer.mastercard.com/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/branding/masterpass-digital-assets/index.md) for all sizes supported in SVG format via URLs

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-16.png)

* The Masterpass Dynamic Button is an additional capability available to select wallet partners. The Partner logo is positioned side by side with the Masterpass Circles (additional variations exist). The Dynamic Button is automatically enabled when merchants integrate to the Masterpass Button URLs per integration guidelines, see [Masterpass Branding](https://developer.mastercard.com/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/branding/index.md)

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-17.png)

* The Masterpass Button must appear at a size that is at least equal to the largest other buttons also displayed (generally matched by height), and must be full-color. The Masterpass Button must be placed in line with other buttons if shown horizontally, or if shown vertically, the Mastercard Button should not be placed in last position

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-18.png)

* Surround the Button with sufficient clear space, which at a minimum should equal ¼ the height (x) of the Button

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-19.png)

* Use the Button at a size that is clear and legible. Appropriate sizing depends on screen resolution and print quality. A good general rule is to follow the minimum sizes as indicated below

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-20-1.png)

* Ensure sufficient contrast between the Masterpass Button and the merchant user interface color. A thin, 1 pixel outline is recommended to be included around the Button to create contrast

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-21.png)

* The Masterpass Button must always be used for clickable functionality where the wallet experience is being invoked. **It must not be used to represent payment option**

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-22.png)

* **Integrate the Button as early as possible in the checkout experience.** Masterpass already provides consumer profile, shipping, and payment information, which gives consumers the opportunity to utilize Masterpass earlier in the checkout flow and allows them to complete the transaction with less effort than might otherwise be required

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-23.png)

* If the consumers do not click the Masterpass Button on the initial shopping cart or sign-in screen, they should also have the option to choose a payment method which enables them to use Masterpass for payment. See example below

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-24.png)

* An extended Masterpass Button may be used if needed to achieve parity or to match other checkout buttons. **Never use a Masterpass Mark for clickable functionality where wallet experience is being invoked**

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-25.png)

### Learn More Link {#learn-more-link}

A 'Learn more' link is available to educate consumers about Masterpass:

* The 'Learn more' link should appear in close proximity to the Masterpass Button and Masterpass Dynamic Button

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-26.png)

* The 'Learn more' link is required on a web page, and must be used with Masterpass Button elsewhere on the merchant's website.A "Learn more" link is recommended, not required, on a mobile user interface

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-27.png)

* The 'Learn more' link must be presented throughout all instances of the checkout experience, and must be labelled as such. Based on the language of the merchant's site, the actual text 'Learn more' may be translated, if required
* The 'Learn more' page is provided through URLs, and Masterpass may update or change the language and graphics at any time in order to improve the user experience
* 'Learn more' must link to the Mastercard-hosted page provided, rather than hosting it directly on the merchant website. The list of countries and languages currently supported can be found [here](https://developer.mastercard.com/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/branding/masterpass-digital-assets/index.md)

### Additional Scenarios {#additional-scenarios}

This section highlights certain screens / user flows for specific functionality.

#### Review Order Page {#review-order-page}

In a standard checkout flow, once a consumer has chosen their preferred card and address from their Masterpass wallet account, it is recommended that a consumer be brought back to the merchant site on the 'Review order' page. This page provides an opportunity for a consumer to review their order before they submit it.

* **A Masterpass Mark must appear on the 'Review order' page**, confirming the consumer has selected Masterpass as their payment method along with other summary information, including card details (last 4 digits, expiration date), billing details, shipping details (if applicable)
* When a Mastercard® account is chosen from the Masterpass wallet, a full-color Mastercard Brand Mark or a full-color image of a Mastercard card must appear in close proximity to the account representation in order to provide clear brand identification

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-28.png)

If a consumer chooses to change the payment method on the 'Review order' page after selecting Masterpass as the payment method:

* The minimum requirement is to re-present all available payment options to the consumer, including Masterpass
* The recommended best practice is to redirect the consumer back to Masterpass in order to change the payment and / or shipping details. It is not recommended to allow the consumer to directly edit payment information on the merchant site if Masterpass was the original payment method selected
* If the consumer chooses a payment method different from Masterpass and /or changes the billing information directly on the merchant site, it would no longer be considered a Masterpass transaction

#### Confirmation Page {#confirmation-page}

After the consumer submits their order, they are recommended to be redirected to a 'Confirmation' page on the merchant site/app.

* A Masterpass Mark must appear on the 'Confirmation' page, confirming the consumer has selected Masterpass as their payment method along with other summary information, including order number, card details (last 4 digits, expiration date), billing details, shipping details (if applicable), costs, and items purchased
* When a Mastercard account is chosen from the Masterpass wallet, a full-color Mastercard Brand Mark or a full-color image of a Mastercard card must appear in close proximity to the account representation in order to provide clear brand identification

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-29.png)

#### "Express" Checkout {#express-checkout}

"Express" checkout is the fastest Masterpass checkout experience for a consumer, that a merchant can provide. It works with the added convenience of not requiring consumers to sign into Masterpass; their merchant site login is all that is required for the merchant to initiate a checkout with Masterpass.

**Please note that "express checkout" is not a branded feature of Masterpass, and this language should not be surfaced to the end user in any capacity.**

* Primary messaging to leverage in CTA:

* Want an even faster checkout?

* Connect now to check out even faster

* Fly through checkout with one simple click

* Secondary messaging to leverage in body copy:

* Connect your Masterpass to this trusted merchant

* You've already been authenticated, so there's no need to enter your username or password

* Check out with a simple click of the Masterpass button

##### 'Pairing' outside of checkout: {#pairing-outside-of-checkout}

For express checkout, a consumer needs to provide consent to pair their wallet with a merchant for a faster, simpler checkout. **It is strongly recommended that pairing be initiated during checkout flow where supported.**

* For initiating pairing outside of checkout flow, merchant should use the Masterpass Button. **It is strongly recommended that the Button to be placed in the account management or payment methods section.** Merchant may use this Button to initiate pairing at other places on their site, except on shopping cart or checkout pages or pages where payment is initiated
* Alternatively, the merchant can use the Masterpass Mark when Masterpass branding is presented within a merchant customized button. Masterpass Circles can be used without the "masterpass" logotype if the display size is less than 48 points wide; in which case "Masterpass" must appear in text in the system operating font and directly to the right of the circles

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-30.png)

##### Pre-checkout data display: {#pre-checkout-data-display}

If a consumer has paired their Masterpass wallet for express checkout on a merchant site, they will be able to see pre-checkout display on the merchant site. This pre-checkout data includes profile information, addresses (if required for shipping purposes) and card data (last 4 digits, expiration date).

* When the consumer uses express checkout, a Masterpass Mark is required on the page where the merchant displays pre-checkout Masterpass wallet data. The purpose is to remind the consumer which wallet they have selected for express checkout, and from where the information is being sourced
* When a Mastercard® account is chosen from the Masterpass wallet, a full-color Mastercard Brand Mark or a full-color image of a Mastercard card must appear in close proximity to the account representation in order to provide clear brand identification
* There are a variety of ways to achieve the above requirements, here are two recommendations:

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-31.png)

* The merchant may allow a consumer to change their default card in the Masterpass wallet to another card in the Masterpass wallet, as in the following example:

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-32.png)

### Referring to Masterpass and Mastercard in Text {#referring-to-masterpass-and-mastercard-in-text}

Masterpass and Mastercard can be referred to in text in the following instances:

* Within the checkout user interface
* Within a merchant's communications and marketing content

When Masterpass™ and Mastercard® are used in text, the following criteria must be met:

* They should be typeset in the same typeface as the surrounding copy, as a single word with no space between "Master" and "pass" or "Master" and "card"
* Use upper case "M" and lower case "p" and "c"
* The entire word "MASTERPASS" and "MASTERCARD" may be in all upper case only if the font style of the user interface or communication also is all upper case
* In a checkout user interface, if all other payment options or card options are in text, Masterpass and Mastercard also may be in text, using the same operating system font.

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-33.png)

* In the first or most prominent text use on a page or screen (after use, if any, in a headline), the ™ and ® respectively are required. In subsequent use on that page or screen, the ™ and ® symbols may be omitted

* When a merchant refers to Masterpass in text in marketing, the following trademark attribution (in a very small size) should be included once in the communication:

* "MASTERPASS and the circles design are trademarks of Mastercard International Incorporated."

* When Mastercard also is used, the attribution reads:

* "MASTERCARD is a registered trademark, and MASTERPASS and the circles design are trademarks of Mastercard International Incorporated."

* In a checkout user interface, digital communications and small-size marketing communications the above trademark attributions are not required

* The Mark may be used as a read-through in a headline but may not be used as a read-through in the body of a communication

* "Masterpass" and "Mastercard" must not be translated

### Marketing and Promotions {#marketing-and-promotions}

Merchants / service providers can use most of the brand assets detailed on this page in marketing to promote their partnership with Masterpass™ as well as to promote Materpass acceptance.

* The merchant / service provider can include their logo and the **Masterpass Mark** in separate locations on a communication, or they may create a stronger relationship by positioning the two logos together, separated by a vertical or horizontal line, and sized at relative parity. The size of the separator line is at the discretion of the merchant, provided the minimum free space around the Masterpass Mark is followed
* To help build Masterpass awareness through stronger linkage to Mastercard, some form of Mastercard attribution is encouraged. Either the **Masterpass by Mastercard** (endorsed) Mark or a prominent reference that Masterpass is by / from Mastercard may be used

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-34.png)

* The endorsed Masterpass Mark only is available in the Horizontal configuration

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-35.png)

* The **endorsed Masterpass Mark**only is used in marketing, not in a checkout user interface

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-36.png)

* A **Masterpass Button**also may be used in marketing communications, however, only when clickable such as in "Click to learn more" \[+ Masterpass Button\] within a web banner or specifically referencing clickable functionality / merchant acceptance such as in "Use where you see" \[+ Masterpass Button\]. The use of the Button in this context is encouraged so the user knows what to look for at checkout

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-37.png)

* Textual use of Masterpass and Mastercard also is approved within merchant marketing communications. See 'Referring to Masterpass and Mastercard in text' section for approved use and requirements
* The merchant uses their own visual style and messaging for marketing or may use the following statement. Any deviation from this statement is subject to Mastercard review and approval: "Sign up for Masterpass™ for fast, secure checkout when shopping online, in-app or at your favorite store"
* Merchants are permitted to download and use Masterpass brand assets (available for [download here](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/uploads/mp_merchant_assets.zip) only for marketing purposes. They must never use these assets for a checkout user interface
* The extended Masterpass Button must not be used in marketing

![alt text](https://static.developer.mastercard.com/content/masterpass-merchant-integration-v7/documentation/images/mc-devzone-mp-merchant-gdl-38.png)
