# Get Transaction Status

The Get Transaction Status API retrieves the transaction status using the complaint's tracking number.

## Prerequisites {#prerequisites}

The issuer needs the following parameter:

* Complaint tracking number

After a customer raises a complaint, the issuer checks the current status of the disputed transaction to determine the next steps. Using the tracking number from the original complaint, the issuer calls the Get Transaction Status API (`GET /transactions/status`).

### Execution steps {#execution-steps}

1. The issuer sends the tracking number in request.
2. For an invalid tracking number, IODR sends an error message to the issuer.
3. For valid tracking number, IODR sends transaction status in the response to the issuer.
4. IODR returns a "record not found" error when a tracking number has no associated complaint.

Note: In Sandbox, transaction status responses are served by a [Mock Data Warehouse (DWH)](https://developer.mastercard.com/india-online-dispute-resolution/documentation/mock-data-warehouse/index.md) that randomly returns success and failure outcomes for testing.

## Understanding the response status {#understanding-the-response-status}

The response contains two independent status fields. Read them together to know both *how the API call went* and *what the transaction actually was*.

### API-call status {#api-call-status}

Indicates the state of the transaction validation call itself. This value is set by IODR.

| `PENDING`   | Validation is still in progress and may take some time.                               | Call this API again after a short interval to check for the latest status.                                                                                            |
| `COMPLETED` | Validation finished successfully.                                                     | Read the `transactionStatus` field for the transaction outcome.                                                                                                       |
| `FAILED`    | The call failed because no matching record, or multiple matching records, were found. | Review the tracking number and refer to [Code and Formats](https://developer.mastercard.com/india-online-dispute-resolution/documentation/code-and-formats/index.md). |

### Transaction status {#transaction-status}

Populated only when `status` is `COMPLETED`. It describes what actually happened to the disputed transaction, based on the records found in the data warehouse.

| `Only Authorization found`          | The transaction was authorized, but no reversal or clearing has been recorded. |
| `Authorization with Reversal found` | The transaction was authorized and then reversed (funds returned).             |
| `Authorization and Clearing found`  | The transaction was authorized and cleared (settled/completed).                |
