# Identity Insights Transactions
source: https://developer.mastercard.com/identity-insights-solutions/documentation/use-cases/identity-insights-for-transactions/index.md

Obtain a risk score and insights on a transaction during Pre-Authentication or Pre-Authorization, or Post Authorization.

## Pre-Authentication or Pre-Authorization of a transaction {#pre-authentication-or-pre-authorization-of-a-transaction}

This flow shows a high-level data flow between the customer and Mastercard for obtaining insights on a transaction. This flow will work for all Direct Customer or Partner Pre-Authentication and Pre-Authorization use cases.

#### Example Sequence {#example-sequence}

Diagram iit_pre_auth_flow

#### Execution Steps {#execution-steps}

1. The Consumer initiates their transaction with the Merchant.
2. The Merchant submits transaction details to their decisioning platform for review (Internal / Third Party).
3. The Decisioning Platform sends a request specifying Identity Insights for Transactions (workflow_id = 1) to the Insights endpoint on the Identity Insights Solutions API.
4. Mastercard evaluates the identity attributes against its global identity network, generates risk scores and reason codes, along with additional insights on the identity.
5. The insights are returned to the Decisioning Platform.
6. The Decisioning Platform leverages the insights within their decisioning to determine how to proceed with the transaction.
7. Based on the risk decision, the Merchant or Acquirer will either:
   * Approve the transaction with reduced friction (low risk)
   * Request additional verification or step-up authentication (elevated risk)
   * Decline or flag the transaction for manual review (substantial risk)

## Post-Authorization of a Transaction {#post-authorization-of-a-transaction}

The following flow shows a high-level data flow between the customer and Mastercard for obtaining insights on a transaction. This flow will work for all Direct Customer or Partner Post-Authorization use cases.

#### Execution Steps {#execution-steps-1}

1. The Consumer completes their transaction with the Merchant.
2. The Merchant submits transaction details to their decisioning platform for review (Internal / Third Party).
3. The Decisioning Platform sends a request specifying Identity Insights for Transactions (workflow_id = 1) to the Insights endpoint on the Identity Insights Solutions API.

5. The insights are returned to the Decisioning Platform.
6. The Decisioning Platform leverages the insights within their decisioning to determine how to proceed with the transaction.
7. Based on the risk decision, the Merchant will either:
   * Complete the order without any manual review (low risk)
   * Mark the transaction for further review before proceeding with the order (elevated risk)
   * Decline the order, initiating a Reversal with the Issuer (substantial risk)
