## Overview {#overview}

The Doconomy Aland Index API enables issuers to provide their consumers with visibility into the environmental impact based on their spending habits.

This API allows an issuer to calculate the carbon footprint and water usage based on consumers' payment transactions. This API can be used inside a banking application or website to provide meaningful and [actionable insights](https://developer.mastercard.com/doconomy-aland-index/documentation/use-cases/index.md#transaction-footprints).

## How it Works {#how-it-works}

The diagram shows a high-level flow between the consumer, issuer, and Mastercard during the calculation of carbon emissions and water usage based on payment transactions.

#### Doconomy Aland Index Workflow: {#doconomy-aland-index-workflow}

1. Issuer collects individual consumer's payment transactions and sends them to Mastercard for carbon footprint calculation.
2. Mastercard then calculates the carbon footprint for the payment transactions and sends them back to the issuer.
3. Issuer presents the carbon footprint data with actionable insight to consumers.
