# IBAN generation

Use the [IBAN Generation API](https://developer.mastercard.com/cross-border-services/documentation/api-ref/value-added-services/account-validation-apis/iban-generation-api/index.md) when an IBAN is required and you have the bank-identifying information needed to generate it.

**Preconditions**

* The IBAN Generation API is available for the relevant country.
* You have collected the bank-identifying information required for the request.

**Workflow**

1. The Customer submits the bank-identifying information, such as the country, branch code and SWIFT BIC, to the [IBAN Generation API](https://developer.mastercard.com/cross-border-services/documentation/api-ref/value-added-services/account-validation-apis/iban-generation-api/index.md).
2. The IBAN Generation API generates the IBAN account value.
3. The API returns either the generated IBAN when generation succeeds, or an error when the IBAN cannot be generated from the information provided. Use the generated IBAN in the relevant Payment flow.
