# Using Bill Pay for the first time

### Welcoming account holders {#welcoming-account-holders}

When consumers experience the Mastercard Bill Pay platform for the first time, they need to find it welcoming, intuitive and inherently sense its value. A launch screen guides new consumers through adding their first bill before landing at the core of the experience --- a dashboard or home screen where they can view all activity.

Bill Pay makes enrolling in e-billing a simple in the flow called "Add a new bill." Once the consumer selects or enters the business or service provider and submits the billing information, they can sign-up for e-billing in one click. This simplified and easy process should increase the rate of account holders who use BPX to enroll in e-billing and begin to enjoy the benefits of simplified bill paying.

### The key consumer {#the-key-consumer}

Based on research, the account holders most likely to show interest in Bill Pay have eight or more bills per month and rarely use automatic bill pay. The advantage of Bill Pay for these consumers is increased ease and convenience. Bill Pay allows them to manage their bills within a single platform instead of jumping between websites and remembering multiple passwords.
To increase transparency, we mention when a business charges credit card fees as well as any delays in payment transmission. We also advise that you share encrypted data security practices, so consumers feel comfortable sharing their personal banking information and billing data.

### The launch screen {#the-launch-screen}

A launch screen provides the foundation for new consumers to understand the value of Bill Pay and sets expectations for how easy it is to pay, manage and organize bills online.
When communicating to your account holders, explain the new service using language that is clear, friendly and transparent.
Include illustrations where you can to make the experience more engaging and informative.

Tip: **Design recommendations**

* Help your account holder feel comfortable throughout their first "add a bill" experience by using clear content and visuals that aid them in completion.
* Prompt consumers to enroll in e-billing when they add the bill to increase enrollment and eliminate the need to reenter data later.
* Use relevant data you possess about an account holder and recommend businesses or services they have used previously to make setting up a new bill easier.
* Alert consumers of the information they will need in order to add a new bill and how long the process will take.
