# Marking a bill as already paid

Although uncommon, it is possible for an account holder to pay a bill enrolled in Bill Pay by other means. For example, an account holder could pay a bill at a physical store location, via mail or by other means outside of Bill Pay.

<br />

Perhaps this payment is made spur-of-the-moment out of convenience. However, it could be a planned payment by the account holder if the service provider, merchant or utility does not accept a specific payment method or charges fees associated with certain credit or debit cards.

<br />

With any platform such as Bill Pay, there will be some usage limitations. If you can allow for these rare cases and keep the account holder as a Bill Pay consumer, it can be a win-win situation. You retain the account holder, who wants to maintain a Bill Pay account as a means to manage a record of payments in addition to paying some of their bills, and you keep them engaged with the platform.

<br />

Another thing to keep in mind is that all bills paid through Bill Pay receive a payment reference number. However, bills paid outside of Bill Pay do not receive a payment reference number but can be recorded in the account holder's bill history for their personal records.
